"Biracial in America" The Ear Hustling Podcast with James & Eric

​Veronica was featured on Episode 23 of The Ear Hustling Podcast with James & Eric. She joined a panel of biracial people to discuss how their lives have been impacted by racism and what they experience when the United States (and Canada!) feels divided. Here, she also shares her spoken word, "The Life of a Mixed Kid." You can listen to this episode wherever you listen to podcasts, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. 

Panel on Race & the African American Experience

Veronica participated in a panel discussion on race and the black experience in the United States. In this discussion, she, like her fellow panelists, was honest and rawly open, especially about the church and its reaction to the new wave of the Black Lives Matter Movement. She found clarity and hope in this discussion, and she hopes you do too. A special thanks to Belong Community for curating the panelists and hosting this conversation. 

Now Presenting, Johnson County Library (Cancelled)

​Veronica was to be a featured poet with Now Presenting, a poetry program of the Johnson County Library. She would have shared her writing and discussed the difference between poetry and spoken word with fellow poet, Maril Crabtree, the author of Fireflies Gathering in the Dark, a Kansas Notable Books 2018 selection. This event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

KCUR Central Standard - Rebroadcasted

​In 2019, Veronica was invited to read her spoken word, "Dear White Police Officer," on KCUR's Central Standard. In the interview portion, she discusses the apologetic nature of the work, media representation of African Americans, and more. On the same day, 1 year later, KCUR rebroadcasted this interview. 

Southern Missouri Youth Convention

November 22, 2019

​Veronica was the opener for the Assemblies of God, Southern Missouri Youth Convention 2019, which welcomed over a thousand students. She presented her spoken word, "Be the One," encouraging students and leaders alike to step out in faith, even if that requires acting against the odds and believing in the seemingly absurd. She would like to especially thank Pastor Austin, the Southern Missouri District Youth Director, for giving her this platform to share Jesus and her faith.

​Veronica had the privilege of performing at Belong, a community of young adults passionate about Jesus and welcoming people as they are. This was only the second time she performed "Be the One," a spoken word created for Sheffield Family Life Center earlier in 2019. 

Freedom Sunday, Sheffield Family Life Center

​Veronica was the featured speaker during Sheffield Family Life Center's "Freedom Sunday," a special service that occurs once annually.  She debuted her spoken word, "Be the One," a work she created in response to Pastor George Westlake III's teaching on faith and obedience to God.

Commencement Ceremony 2019, Rockhurst University

May 18, 2019

​Veronica was the undergraduate speaker for Rockhurst University's 2019 Commencement Ceremony. She was nominated by English faculty and selected by the committee to represent the Class of 2019 on graduation day. In her very personal speech, she reflects on her experience as an outsider, tying in themes from Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and describes how Rockhurst University became her home.

​Veronica gave her first TEDx Talk! The year's theme was "Smokescreens: things aren't as they seem." She discussed the biracial experience and the importance of including the biracial narrative in American history and contemporary conversation. 

Alpha Sigma Nu Induction

Veronica was elected President of Rockhurst University's Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society for the 2018-2019 school year. She presided over the 2019 induction of the junior and senior class. 

Black Culture Appreciation Program, Swope Parkway Church of Christ

​Veronica presented her spoken word and poetry at the Black Culture Appreciation Program of Swope Parkway Church of Christ. She was excited to see the community come together and reflect on how far America has come and how far it has yet to go. 

Festival of Student Achievement, Rockhurst University

April 12, 2019

​Veronica's paper, "The Rhetoric of Rap; An Analysis of Derek Minor's "Nothing to Something"," was accepted, and she presented it at Rockhurst University's Festival of Student Achievement. She discussed the rhetorical techniques emphasized by Aristotle and Plato and showed how they are utilized in contemporary rap. Her poetry was also accepted, and she read it in the Greenlease Gallery. 

Scholarship Brunch, Rockhurst University

​Veronica was selected to speak on behalf of Rockhurst Unniversity's scholarship recipients at the annual Scholarship Luncheon, where donors are invited to celebrate their contribution and the success of their students. In her speech, Veronica gave special thanks to her donors, the Hummel family, as she celebrated her final year at Rockhurst. 

Sigma Tau Delta International Convention

​Veronica attended her English honor society's international convention. Since her poetry submission was accepted, she presented her collection, "A Girl's World," in which the female experience is examined through a nostalgic, and somewhat food-themed, lens. 

Native Youth Kansas City Revival

​Veronica preached during the opening night of Native Youth Kansas City's "Revival" series. This series took place in March for three consecutive years, and Veronica was excited and honored to be the first Wednesday night speaker in 2019.  

Town Hall, Rockhurst University

Veronica was invited to speak on a panel composed of students, faculty, and alumni at Rockhurst University's Town Hall, as they celebrated 50 years of women being allowed to attend the institution. 

KCUR Central Standard

MLK Celebration at the America Jazz Museum

​Veronica performed her spoken word, "The Story of a Dream," and read her poem "Dear White Police Officer." She discussed the legacy Martin Luther King Jr. left and issued a call to action for those who wish to honor his sacrifice.

32 Annual Governor's Student leadership Forum on Faith and Values

Veronica was nominated to represent Rockhurst University at this year's forum! This year is special because there will be an inaugural ball and Governor's breakfast with Governor Mike Parson and HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

Veronica was a guest speaker at Cornerstone Enterprise's New Year's Eve Celebration. She was featured alongside Griff, Co-Host of Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell, Anthony Riddle, and Chris Allen-Murray. She performed her spoken words, "Selah" and "Dragons."

Midwest Modern Language Association

Veronica presented her paper, "Writing in Black and White: Baldwin’s Method of Writing to Polarized Consumers," in the MMLA Undergraduate Symposium. She discussed Baldwin's writing tactics and explored how to apply them to conversation surrounding race today. 

Phi Theta Kappa Induction Keynote

Veronica was the keynote speaker for the fall induction of Phi Theta Kappa, Upsilon Xi. As a class of 2017 graduate, she was happy to be home! She discussed her experiences as a PTK officer of service, scholarship winner, and alumna.

National Fine Arts Festival

Veronica competed at the National Fine Arts Festival in the Kappa Tau division in Houston, Texas. She won 1st place in spoken word and 3rd place in poetry. 

RU's Alpha Sigma Nu Induction

​​Veronica was inducted into Rockhurst University's highest honor society, Alpha Sigma Nu! Only the top 4% of the junior and senior class are selected, and Veronica was among them! 

RU's Festival of Student Achievement

​Veronica was invited to perform at Rockhurst University's 2018 Festival of Student Achievement (FOSA), an annual event designed to honor students who "exemplify academic excellence and leadership." She performed the poems "Mm!," "Image of the Titanic," and "on Parchment."

​Veronica was inducted into Rockhurst University's English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta! This honor requires a 3.3 minimum GPA. 

Touchstone Launch, KSU

March 30, 2018

Veronica's spoken word, "The Story of a Dream" and her poem, "Mm!" were published in Touchstone, K-State University's literary magazine. K-State celebrated the magazine's return to print with a special event, at which Veronica was invited to present her work. 

Featured Speaker, Sheffield Family Life Center

​Veronica was invited to perform her spoken word, "A Message from the Other Side," at Sheffield Family Life Center. In this piece, she describes the pain and impact of depression and suicide. She then proceeds to reveal the redemption, peace, and hope she found in the Jesus Christ. 

Blue Valley High School's Diversity Celebration

February 15, 2018

Veronica was invited to speak at Blue Valley High School in celebration of Black History month. She performed "The Story of a Dream" spoken word and discussed the importance of being bold and speaking out against racial inequality and discrimination. 

Mosaic Bible Fellowship

Veronica performed "The Story of a Dream" at Mosaic Bible Fellowship on Sunday Morning! 

Teen Girl Conference-Northeast Baptist Church

 Veronica was the keynote for the 2017 Teen Girl Conference at Notheast Baptist Church. The theme was PRICELESS and Veronica had a wonderful time encouraging and uplifting the young women who attended.  

Crossroads Academy

Veronica performed her spoken word "The Story of a Dream" for students at Crossroads Academy. This spoken word celebrated the work of Dr. King, just in time for Black History Month. She also discussed the writing process and the importance of speaking out against oppression.

2017 MLK Celebration

January 16, 2017

The American Jazz Museum hosted a celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Veronica debuted "The Story of a Dream," which was written specifically for this event! 

Blue Valley High School

Veronica performed "The Story of a Dream" spoken word, among others, in celebration of Black History Month at Blue Valley High School. She discussed spoken word, its history, and how she composes her own spoken words.

First Fridays on 18th and Vine

Veronica sold copies of "Mile Marker 17" at First Fridays on 18th and Vine.

Veronica's Book Release/Signing Party

Veronica celebrated the publishing of her very first book, Mile Marker 17, with a release party. (This was the first time she signed her name in one of her books!) She is incredibly grateful for all who have supported her in her journey to become a published author.
